The $500 Rule
Today’s lesson is the Dancers Alliance minimum: $500 per show or shoot day, $175 for a one-to-four-hour rehearsal, $250 for four to eight hours, and $150 for travel days — with agency fees on top. Every profession has a floor, and the floor is not a suggestion. It is the line that says skilled labor has value before the music starts, before the costume goes on and before the first count of eight.
Before you quote a price, learn the minimum for your discipline. Then quote above it, because minimums are survival and you are building a life. Your training, preparation, recovery, transportation and experience do not disappear just because a producer calls the opportunity “great exposure.”
Use it in negotiation: “My rate starts at the Dancers Alliance minimum of $500 for the day.” Say it plain. Say it early. Then let silence do the rest. You do not need to apologize for knowing the floor beneath your own feet.

Knowledge is the real gold.
The Fool has danced in union houses and non-union streets, and he learned this the golden way: the performer who doesn’t know the rates gets paid in applause. Applause doesn’t pay rent. So here’s the map — the major American performer unions, what they cover, what the minimums look like and the rules that protect you.
Rates change. Always verify current terms with the union itself before accepting an engagement.
SAG-AFTRA
The screen giant.Covers film, TV, streaming, commercials and broadcast performers.
TV / theatrical: $1,283 per day or $4,456 per week. Commercials: $855.20 per session plus pension and health. Corporate / educational: $673–$837 per day; narrator or spokesperson: $1,223–$1,451 first day.
Key rule: 3% annual minimum increases are locked in.
Actors’ Equity · AEA
The stage shield.Covers Broadway actors and stage managers.
$2,717 per week minimum, rising 3% yearly. Swings who cover multiple roles receive +6%.
Key rules: Maximum 12 consecutive performance days; first-ever paid personal days in Equity history.
AGVA
The variety vault — the Fool’s home turf.The American Guild of Variety Artists covers circus, variety, nightclub, cabaret, theme park performers, skaters and comedians. The Rockettes and Disneyland and Universal Studios casts work under AGVA contracts.
Rates are set per contract — call the union for the applicable minimum.
Know this: When Cirque du Soleil played Broadway, its circus artists remained AGVA under a special agreement.
AGMA
The opera & ballet house.The American Guild of Musical Artists covers opera singers plus ballet and concert-dance companies; terms are negotiated per company.
Recent dancer minimums: American Ballet Theatre corps about $1,232 per week; Joffrey about $1,194; Boston Ballet about $1,269; LA Opera corps about $1,566.
Key rule: Check the specific company agreement; one house’s scale is not another’s.
AFM
The musicians’ union.The American Federation of Musicians covers instrumentalists.
Scales are set by each local. Example: a three-hour casual engagement carries an approximately $147 minimum for a side musician.
Key rule: Your local and engagement type determine the scale.
IATSE
The backstage army.Covers stagehands, electricians, riggers, wardrobe, hair and makeup, and camera operators.
Not performers — but the reason the show happens at all.
